A rich and varied curriculum

More than ever, young musicians must master their craft — making them reliable professionals — while also developing the flexibility to adapt to all foreseeable developments, and the creativity that makes them interesting and relevant artists.

At the Early Music Department of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, we address this reality by providing our students with a comprehensive training program:

  • Musical practiceboth instrumental and vocal. 18 different instruments are taught by highly active teachers — renowned soloists, members of top-tier ensembles and orchestras, researchers at the cutting edge of their fields.
  • Applied music theory. We delve into inquiries concerning the comprehension and interpretation of early repertoire through specialized courses. These sessions incorporate diverse musical training techniques, such as chant sur le livre, improvisation/ornamentation, and instruction in reading early notation. Moreover, students engage in exploring musical writing in historical styles, gaining knowledge and proficiency in temperaments, delving into organology, and examining the intertwined history of art and music, including rhetoric and philosophy. Additionally, we address specific aspects of musical life, closely aligning them with instrument classes for a comprehensive educational experience.
La recherche au service de la pratique

Research in the service of practice

Throughout their tenure in our department, students acquire the comprehensive skills essential for meeting the diverse demands placed on today's early music professionals with utmost effectiveness.

We also encourage them to develop their own research, and by supporting their individual approaches , we pass on working and investigative methods that will enable them to become the interpreters of tomorrow.

Research and practice are at the heart of our teaching. Each year, our research symposium sets the tone and opens up new perspectives, drawing the entire department into the exploration of a particular theme or repertoire.

Numerous projects every year

The year of study is punctuated by numerous musical projects.

The partnerships that the Early Music Department has developed with festivals such as l'Automne musical de Spa, Embarquement immédiat in Valenciennes, Festivita and Musiq3 in Brussels — alongside the Conservatoire's rich concert season — multiply the experiences that prepare students for a professional life as a musician.

Multi-disciplinary coachings led by the department's teachers, regularly enriched by the artistic direction ofeminent guest artists (B. Foccroulle, S. Kuijken, J. van Immerseel…).

Multi-disciplinary study trips regularly linked to the annual symposium (Venice, Naples, Bologna, Rome, Brussels…). Instrument fairs organised at the Conservatoire to meet instrument makers. Multidisciplinary study days to explore all aspects of a chosen topic.
